Hello,
My little dachshund called Noodle (4 months) has dry skin problems, but only under his arms. There is a bit of a rash there and small red bumps. Its been like this for a week or so and doesn’t bother him at all, nor is it getting any worse or better. I put him on a good oatmeal shampoo and conditioner very early because he had dandruff when we got him. But that has cleared up now. I don’t bathe him often so as to not dry out his skin. I am a first time puppy owner and am worried for the little guy. I live in Perth, Australia and it has just started getting rainy outside, perhaps he has a wet grass allergy?

I went to the pet shop yesterday and have now started putting him on fish oil fatty acids type mixture everyday to help with his coat. Should I stick with this and see how it goes? I just love him so much, he has the best personality and is so friendly. He is also doing awesome in his training. I was told I couldn’t get him to do anything as Dachshunds have a rep for being stubborn, but already he sits, comes (even at the park when other little dachshies are around to play with!), lays down, rolls over and shakes. So proud of my little man.

Any help or tips for my little guy is much appreciated. Thank you! (And before anyone yells at me for taking him to the park, only small dogs go there, including 7 other dachshies!)

My husband and I just adopted a 6 week old mini dachshund girl yesterday. We were at a yard sale, and I guess the people were giving her away. I’m not sure how many others were in the litter, if there were any at all, other than the little girl we took, and the little boy they were keeping. Anyway. They had given her away, and she had just been brought back, because the people who took her said their little girl couldn’t take care of her. Well, duh! Anyway, being the animal lovers we are, and already having 2 minis at home (ages 10 and 15), we had to giver her a new home! These people say she is 6 weeks old. They said the mother stopped having anything to do with the pups when they were about 3 1/2 wks old (mom and dad were bother on sight). So, the couple said the pups had been eating hard puppy food since then. Lily, as we named her, has a VERY good appetite. After eating yesterday evening, she was a little “urpy”, but she didn’t vomit, and after a few minutes, she was fine. That was about 1/8 cup of dry Nutro MAX puppy food (which was the open bag they sent home with us). After feeding her this morning, she did throw just about every bit of it back up. When I fed her leter this afternoon, I gave her VERY little, and I moistened it with warm water to the point where it was mush. This time, it was Blue Buffalo puppy kibble, which is what we want her to be on. I figured she was eating too fast, and maybe a little too much. I gave her not much more than a TBS of “mush”. Immediately after, she started heaving, and threw it all back up again. She does not act sick AT ALL. She is energetic, and then naps, acts absolutely like a normal happy, healthy puppy. She has access to fresh water, which she has drank. There seems to be absolutely nothing apparently wrong with her, other than not keeping down her food. She has pooped probably 3 or 4 times since we got her yesterday, and it looks “normal”. Not knowing what else to do, and not being able to get into our vet until tomorrow, we bought a can of Hartz puppy replacement formula, because I do not want her starving!!! She lapped up the instructed amount on the can, and has not shown any sign of heaving or throwing up since. That was about an hour ago. I was not around my hubby’s doxies when they were babies, so I have never dealt with such a TINY little dog. I am wondering if maybe she’s not even 6 weeks, but I guess maybe the Vet can tell us that. I just don’t know what else to do for her; I know she’s hungry, as she cries for food. Any advice anyone can offer would be grealty appreciated. Thank You!

My miniature dachshund, who is nine years old gave birth to a beautiful and healthy puppy last April. This was the first puppy she has ever had. I am afraid the puppy died after a couple of hours. Although she looked after the puppy and felt very satisfied and proud about him she kept moving about in the room carrying the puppy in her mouth. I have a suspicion that she didn’t feed him. Could you tell me how puppies should be looked after and what possibly could have gone wrong?
Thanks

Now my dad is mad, he never really wanted her in the first place and my mom says we might have to give her away. I don’t want to do that so I have just now decided I am going to take training her to be my responsibility. I need any and all information on how to re-train her to do her business outside, and, how to get started in training her in the basics.

Hello,
We acquired a short haired mini (“brown baby wiener dog” as my daughter calls her) in December and she is currently 8 months old. It has been an exceptionally cold winter in Alberta with many days -20 to -30 Celsius so we decided to use the puppy pads to house train instead of ending up with a furry brown Popsicle shivering at the backdoor. She took well to the pads as she would use them regularly and keep the messes contained to one area. As the weather warmed we began to take her outdoors. We walk her daily and try to feed and water her at consistent intervals. She currently spends the night in her kennel and as soon as we get up in the morning she goes outside poops, pees, then gets a treat and praise. The morning ritual is like clockwork.

Now the problem: every other time she’ll randomly go throughout the house. During week days she is contained to the kitchen area, which includes her kennel, a dog bed and toys, from 8 till 3. When the kids get home they let her out. Sometimes she goes, sometimes not. She’ll sniff around the yard for 20 minutes then come inside and go. Left out long enough she’ll go but sometimes it is not possible to keep a constant eye on her to see if she went or not. She’s taking to her walking and other commands well just not the house training.

I understand doxies are notoriously hard to housebreak and starting her off with training pads likely set her back so we’re being patient. Any suggestions and advice from those who have experience with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

We tried the crate method but it made him worse because he does not like being confined in a such a small place, and when we sectioned him to a room he chewed through the baby gate we put up. We have the pads to put on the floor because he is mostly inside during the day, but he goes everywhere else but the pads. I need all the advise I can get!

Hi there

I’m hoping someone can help me out, I’ve got a 7 year old Doxie and I also own a lot of birds, my dog has found an unhealthy attraction to them and I really need some advice on how I can keep the birds safe from him, he keeps trying to get into their cages. We’ve had an unfortunate accident where one of my birds got out and I believe my doxie has eaten it considering the amount of feathers and no bird to be found.

This is the first time he’s had caged birds around him.

Please help.
