Hi , I have a 7 month old Female Dachshund .. She is friendly with my husband and I .. But not anyone else. I put her in Puppy Classes and take her to the dog parks and everything. But she will not let anybody pet her or hold her. Are all dachshund like this? will she ever be friendly to anybody? thanks
hi there, i have to say that in my experience, doxies are more aloof than your other breeds like the golden retrievers etc. they are very selective with who they go near etc. a good way to increase their trust is to give people treats to give your doxie, that way they get into the habit of going to other people – even if they are expecting to get something in return… i’m training my doxie at the moment and so far it seems to be working well.
How long have you had her?
Not all Dachshunds are like this unless they have been left unsocialized or have had some form of physical trauma that has left an emotional scar (like abuse).
Socializing is a form of training, and like all training, needs repetitive, consistent, and persistent trainers/handlers.
She can still be worked with, so don’t give up on her yet.
We got her when she was 3 months old.. I havent given up on her. I keep taking her around people and other dogs .I am just afraid that she wont ever be friendly.. Thanks
I find my dog relaxes after she meets people a few times. She barks like crazy. I try to keep her pre-occupied. Once she gets to know people she loves them and is very sweet. They definitely are picky with who they like. You can force it. Treats work sometimes, but often she’s not interested if she’s busy “protecting”. I also find she barks more or is less friendly when she has to go to the bathroom.
Just keep encouraging her when she’s good. You’ll get there! It’s still early.
