We have a 10 month old mini blue dapple dachshund female. She has been spade and early sept she developed pimple like bumps on her head, down her back. They get scabby. She is loosing her hair and is itching. She has been to the vet and they think it maybe an allergy. We have changed her food, our laundry soap, her treats to no avail. We have given her anti-itch meds and cleaning her with med shampoos. Can anyone give me any helpful ideas. The vet is not much help. They have sold us expensive foods and shampoos but nothing seems to help. Please help us to get our beautiful puppy healthy again.
My 3-year-old female has the EXACT same issue and I have had a hard time pin pointing the cause. Something that may help you or not, is that she has almost always had a problem with her skin before and after spaying.
I have found the vets very unhelpful myself. Some things that I have noticed are:
- It worsens in Winter (cold/dry air) but alternatively does not get much better in summer
- I have supplemented her food with Omega-3 and 6 supplements and actually put on an antiseptic lotion and comb it through her. She seems to like this as it stops itching. Both have improved things, but not cured.
One thing that I have not yet done (but am later this month) is getting her blood tested for hypothyroidism. She has a nasty cold intolerance. If you would like, I will let you know how these tests go if you think it might help.
My goodness, that sounds horrible =\ My dad has an Australian Shepard, and she loses almost ALL of her fur in the Spring/Summer, and it kind of comes back in the Winter. The vets are also saying its a kind of allergy, and I think they gave her either a shot or a cream for it…I know the breeds are extremely different, but the symptoms sound a lot alike. Did the vet mention anything about shots or creams? And slathermonkey I think has a good point with the Omega-3s and such. Good luck with this!
Our Dachshund had a bad cough and skin problems and our vet put him on Benedryl, twice a day. It helped, he doesn’t cough or scratch anymore, the skin has cleared up greatly. We have tried to take him off the Benedryl but he starts scratching again. When it’s hot out (we live in Florida) he still will get prickly heat that we have to rub ointments on. And if he goes on a lawn that has chemicals he also will break out on his belly. Not to mention the awful ant bites. Because he is a short hair he doesn’t have the protection on his belly side like other breeds might. So I say Benedryl is worth a shot any ways. We give it to him with cream cheese once in the morning and once in the evening with his meals. Keep us posted.
I am glad I found this forum. My Dachshund, Cody started to have the same skin and coughing problems after he got neutered. The vet told me that he had allergies. I now feed him with holistic food, I have also changed to organic cleaners and such, but he is still losing hair on his ears and scratches his neck and bite his paws sometimes. I will try Benadryl. Thanks for the info.
