Hi my husband and I bought a puppy daschund about 3 weeks ago. When we first got him his stools were fine but after about a week of having him they became runny and had traces of blood and mucus. We have not changed his food and he has been to our vets twice now. He has had a steriod injection, antibiotics and a paste to try and help him get back to normal but nothing is working. My husband and I have tried him on chicken and rice and also fasted him for 12 hours but this didn’t work either. He is still playing as normal and has a healthy appitite and wonder if anyone has any thoughts on what might be wrong with him. His vaccinations are up to date and he has a normal temperature so i don’t think he has parvo. The only thing i can think of is that it might be down to stress, as he is obviously in a new home trying to get used to a new routine and being left alone on occassions.

First off, how many weeks is your puppy? If your puppy is six to twelve weeks you need to mix the food with warm water to make it soft for the dogs. Second what is the dog eating? I recommend Iams for puppies small breed dog formula. It could be as simple as your dog not agreeing with what he is eating. DO a 24 hour fast. Each time my dogs are sick we fast them for a day. Second, you need to find a VCA certified vet in your area if the other two were unable to find out what is wrong with your dog. Call a local Dachshund shelter or group to find out where they take their dogs. It is inexcusable for vets to prescribe something without knowing what is wrong. It may be as simple as a parasite. Third, Try Aloe Vera Juice in your dogs water. You can find it in most grocery stores or local drug stores. I mix about half water half juice.
P.S, you need to take in a poop sample in order to have it tested(the vet should have asked for this) and an x-ray should be done as well.
ASK YOUR VET ABOUT THIS AS WELL, I RESEARCHED THIS FOR YOU. I MAY BE WRONG ABOUT THE USE OF A SPECIFIC TYPE OF ANTI-BIOTIC TO TREAT THIS
Coccidiosis
“Diarrhea is the main sign of coccidiosis. Blood and mucous in the diarrhea is a common symptom.
Your vet may prescribe Sulfa antibiotics. This will not kill the organism but will keep it in check until your puppy develops a good level of immunity.”
I have found that our little mini dax boy has a rather sensitive digestion. If he has chicken he vomits, if he has wet food with no mixer his stools are rather loose and have traces of mucus – he does react to stress as well, I think you just need to move gently, we have “Patrick” on a mixture of Science Plan Hills and the Nature Diet (wet food) as he doesn’t like the dry food on its own and he seems to be pretty good now. He still hates being left on his own though!
