Suggestions for naming your new dog
If you've had a pet before you knows how difficult it is to find just the right name. Here a few things to keep in mind when considering that perfect name:

Make a list of names that come to mind.

Keep the name as simple as possible, no more than a few syllables.

Choose a name that will be easily recognized by your dog.

Is the name easy to call out loud?

Consider basing the name on how your dog acted when you first met.

Don't use names that sound like standard obedience instructions (e.g. sit, stay, come, no etc.)

Try the name out for a short period of time to see how it works.

If the name feels natural, go with that one! If everyone doesn't agree, try the next name on your list.

If you're adopting a dog from a previous owner, try and keep the name your pet already owns. Dogs from rescue organizations may have a name that was given by the rescuers. Since the rescued animal was probably only with the rescue team for a short time period, you can feel comfortable making a name change to one that fits you and your household better.
Renaming rescue dogs
Puppies in a litter are often named by the breeder reflecting a physical attribute the pup has or because of a specific color.
Rescue dogs either come with the name they had at their previous home (if known), or a name given to them by the shelter or rescuer.
There is no reason NOT to re-name a rescue dog or new puppy that you adopt into your home. If you use that name in a positive manner and always associate their name with good things, the dog will quickly learn to understand that name means HIM!
Getting your dog to understand his new name is easy: his name is used when training and reinforcing commands, and is also used when giving treats (“Good Freda!” treat “What a good girl, Freda!” treat). The new name is ALWAYS used in a positive manner.
